Five of the Scariest Haunted Hotels and Castles

If stories of the paranormal fascinate you, then you have no doubt read up on the thousands of places worldwide that are reportedly home to invisible beings. Although many of these sites are also home to a lengthy and often sad tale, many report calm and quiet sightings of somebody dressed in old clothes hovering around a staircase.

Haunted Castles

In some places though, the reported sightings are a lot more chilling and even the stories behind the buildings will have you cringing in fear. After scouring loads of sites on the internet, I am proud to bring you five of the most terrifying haunted hotels and places in the world:

Hotel Provincial, New Orleans:

Used as a military hospital in the past, many guests and staff at the hotel have reported seeing wounded soldiers, surgeons and nurse maids during their stay. This may not be that scary, you think, but what about blood stained sheets found by cleaners, which suddenly disappear. Doors open and close, voices are heard as well as footsteps and there is even a report from a female guest who claimed to have been pulled from her bed and dragged across the floor while she kicked and screamed. Many séances have been held at the hotel over the years and some have produced ghostly visions and even an audio recording where something clearly says “tell Dianne I have to go”. New Orleans is widely considered as the most haunted city in North America, and there are various other spots to see.

Crenshaw House, Illinois:

A house that is now owned by the state and closed to guests, it was built in 1838 and is often referred to as the “Old Slave House”. John Crenshaw, who owned the house, used to kidnap black men, women and children, who were mostly freed slaves, and force them to work for him. The third floor of the house is made up of cramped rooms where he reportedly tortured the victims by bolting them to the floor and mercilessly beating them. In the times when it was open, many people reportedly attempted to stay overnight in the attic, all of whom ran from the house terrified before morning.

Crescent Hotel, Arkansas:

The infamous room 218 is reportedly haunted by a former stone mason who fell to his death during construction and landed on the spot where the room was built. Hotel employees have named the spirit Michael, and guests have reported seeing him reach for them from the bathroom mirror, or cry out in terror from the ceiling. At one stage, the hotel was also a cancer hospital and guests have reported seeing nurses moving bodies through the hallways.

Chillingham Castle, England:

Widely regarded as one of the most haunted castles in Great Britain, the torture chamber has been host to some scary moments. A young boy who was reportedly buried in the walls is heard crying out at night at times, while visitors have also said they have felt the dress of a woman brush past them, and it is said that she roams the castle looking for her husband.

Murder Castle, Chicago:

The deranged invention of the world’s first serial killer, HH Holmes. Using different builders to create different sections of the World’s Fair Hotel so that only he would now the full layout, the hotel consisted of gas chambers, dark rooms and a maze in which he used to kill his victims. Chutes were also built so he could send the bodies down to his hidden basement where he had a furnace and slime pits which he used to dispose of the evidence. Holmes would disfigure his victims and also sold organs. Convicted of 27 murders, although many believed the number was closer to 200. The building was eventually burned to the ground after Holmes was executed.
